Mold Exposure

Mold Exposure may occur during the cleanup of a flooded basement due to a burst pipe or a leak. Water damage provides ideal conditions for mold growth. To prevent mold growth, water must be removed as soon as possible. Mold can begin to develop within 24 hours after exposure to excessive amounts of water or moisture.

Materials That Soak Up Water in a Basement:

  • Newspaper: Spread out newspaper on the floor of the basement to absorb water. Be sure to replace the newspaper as it becomes wet.
  • Towels: Towels are another good option for soaking up water in a basement. They can be placed on furniture or other surfaces to absorb excess moisture.
  • Wet/Dry Vacuum Cleaner: A wet/dry vacuum cleaner can be used to remove water from the basement floor and other surfaces. Be sure to use a wet/dry vacuum cleaner that is specifically designed for this purpose.

Once the water is removed, basement can be cleaned and disinfected to prevent mold growth. It is important to wear a mask and gloves when cleaning up water damage to prevent exposure to mold.
