How to tell if water damage is new or old?

New water damage
* Stains on the ceiling that are dark brown or black

Old water damage
* Stains on the ceiling that are light brown or yellow
* Dry, brittle, or cracked paint
* Ceiling tiles that are discolored or warped
* A musty smell that is less intense than with new water damage
