Moisture Mapping Monitoring Acceptable Moisture Levels

Understanding Acceptable Moisture Levels

Moisture mapping is a crucial process that ensures the proper maintenance and longevity of buildings and other structures. Maintaining appropriate moisture levels is essential for preventing structural damage, mold growth, and other health and safety hazards.

What is an Acceptable Damp Reading?

Acceptable moisture levels vary depending on factors such as the age of the building, type of materials used, and environmental conditions. In general, the following moisture levels are considered acceptable:
  • Concrete: 1.5% - 3.0%
  • Wood (dry): 10% - 12%
  • Wood (damp): 12% - 15%
  • Wood (wet): >15%
  • Gypsum board: 0.5% - 1.0%
Readings above these levels indicate excessive moisture that should be addressed promptly to prevent structural damage and mold growth.
